Why I Decided Against Buying An iPad

April 30, 2010 by Jim Pad

On the surface, I’m probably an ideal iPad candidate: heavily invested in Apple gear already and looking for a device that’s smaller than the 17″ MacBook Pro I use for much of my writing, but with better battery life (dell d610 battery) than the MacBook Air I use as my go-to traveling machine. I need wireless access for light duty work way from the house and I’m already happily using an iPod Touch for productivity apps like WriteRoom, so the multi-touch iPhone OS is familiar. I still own a fully functional Newton MessagePad (or pre-Steve iPad v.1) and to top it all off, my wife wants one. So why did I buy another MacBook Pro instead?

The iPad finally arrives in Canada on May 28, although most of the people I know in these parts who really wanted one drove to a Buffalo Apple Store weeks ago. While not quite reflective of the recent par performance of the Canadian dollar, the entry level Canadian version is only a fifty buck premium over what Americans pay, which isn’t too bad.

During the years of buildup leading to the big reveal in January, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion around here that I’d be camping out at some Apple Store south of the border once the iPad was finally released. Besides the fact that I seem to collect Apple products the way some people collect T-shirts (although, to those who would cry “fanboy,” please note that I continue to resist the siren call of the iPhone, relying on a perfectly serviceable HTC smartphone instead), I’ve been a relatively early adopter of related technologies, such as Apple’s earlier go at pad computing, the Newton, digital media (including eBooks, MP3 players and media centers) and mobile computing in general.

Whether I’m off camping or taking the kids to the park, when I have to bang off an article, I pack a laptop and 3G modem so I can get what I need done. The laptop serves multiple purposes, including entertainment as a movie player for those times when we’re camping and poor weather leaves us looking for ways to keep the kids busy in the trailer (we keep a big stash of comic books too, but sometimes you need electronic entertainment, even in the woods). The problem arises when we’re camping off the grid. Suddenly, 3 hours of juice for a laptop over the course of 3 or 4 days seems woefully inadequate, especially considering the multiple uses the machine may be put to. Of course there are ways to overcome this limitation, but they usually involve additional gear. And the idea of having a $2k MacBook Air stomped by a bear, soiled by s’mores or accidentally crushed when the trailer is folded down is always a disturbing possibility.( dell latitude d820 battery)

The iPad should have been a perfect alternative: cheaper, capable of covering all the needed tasks (plus acting as an eBook reader) and eliminating the external modem, all while taking up less space. And it would make a great casual web browser for my wife on those days when she leaves her laptop at work and comes looking for my machine.

Version 4 of the iPhone OS looks as though it should address most of my multitasking concerns, but when I spent a few weeks pondering what to do, I ended up buying a base level 13″ MacBook Pro instead. Here’s why. When the MacBook is used conservatively, battery life between the two is a wash; both are rated by Apple at roughly 10 hours. The MacBook has a bigger screen at 13″ vs. 9.7″ with a higher resolution at 1280 by 800 vs. 1024 by 768. The MacBook lacks built-in 3G wireless, but I’ve already paid for a 3G USB modem and I suspect it gets better reception thanks to the ability to plug in an antenna.

The MacBook has the ports needed to plug in accessories like a digital camera and the space to store data. I can use my existing applications instead of having to buy and adapt to new iPad-specific versions of iWork, and I can download and e-mail files easily. I can run Windows on the MacBook, which I occasionally need to do with some clients who use specific software packages. My Sony eBook reader will go for weeks on a charge and its e ink screen is superior to the iPad’s for reading outdoors, so no worries about losing out on the iPad as an eReader. As a web browser, I suspect the iPad would be an exercise in frustration for my wife and kids, who tend to hit a lot of sites that make use of Flash for video or games.(dell inspiron 600m battery)

The iPad has a definite weight advantage at 1.6 pounds vs. 4.5 pounds, but the MacBook is still quite manageable and when you factor in an external keyboard for the iPad (which, from what I’ve read, is pretty much a must for productive writing), the compactness factor narrows too. With current iPad demand, Apple hasn’t had any need to discount either, so while my wife was able to take advantage of educational pricing for the MacBook, that isn’t currently an option for the iPad. With the MacBook Pro’s educational discount, an external keyboard for the iPad and assuming the high end iPad configuration required for media storage, applications and 3G access, the price disparity is pretty much wiped out, with under $200 separating the two. Not worth the compromises, even for the cool factor.

So I ordered the MacBook Pro and so far, it’s been a great little machine. When used for writing and web browsing with the screen at about half brightness, 9 hours or so of battery life has been attainable. It’s not as sexy as the Air, but still compact and very functional, not to mention more solidly built and a smaller financial hit should the worst happen. I’m not trashing the iPad; I still think it’s a great concept and a product with tremendous potential, but the time just wasn’t right for me this round. I’ll join the ranks of happy iPad owners eventually, but in the meantime, I’ll just look at them enviously in coffee shops. And maybe I’ll plunk that Newton on the table just to mess a few people up.

iPad was released a few days ago, as the biggest competitor for the kindle. iPad embeds a book reader named iBook, iBooks uses an ebook format called ePub. If you have many PDF files or some other format ebooks you want to put on iPad, there is a free converter called calibre can help. And this step by step tutorial will guide you through the process of converting PDF files to ePub for iPad with calibre.

Step1. Download and install calibre ebook converter. The interface is very slightly different in each version. These tutorial images are captured on Mac, but Windows users should have no problem at all following along.

Step2. Find the PDF file you want to convert. In this tutorial, we used ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ as example.

Step3. The first time you run calibre it will take you through a quick setup. The first thing you’ll want to do is specify your ‘ebooks’ folder. This is the location you’ll save your .ePub files.

Calibre will now download additional information about your PDF/ebook – if it can find it. If it’s an eBook (as a .pdf), you may need to manually enter the book title and author name if it isn’t present when you load it into calibre initially.

Step7. After finish download the ebook meta information. Click the small arrow next to the Convert E-books button. From the list that will appear, select Convert individually. You will be prompted with a ‘summary’ window prior to calibre making the final conversion. Click the OK button.

Step8. After the conversion is finished, you can locate the folder on step3 where you save the ePub file. Then connect your iPad to your Mac or PC, and launch iTunes. From the iTunes menu select File -> Add to Library… to import the converted ePub file. The new .ePub file will now appear in the Books section of iTunes.

Step9. Select your iPad in iTunes and select the Books tab. After confirming your new .ePub book is listed, click the Sync button. If you want to watch video on iPad, here is a step by step guide regarding how to rip DVD and convert video to iPad. That’s all. Then you can lunch iBooks on iPad and find the eBooks.

Why I Want An Ipad

April 29, 2010 by Jim Pad

Over the past week we’ve looked at why the iPad will be good for contractors and why you might not be the target audience for the device. After considerable thought, I’d like to share why I want an iPad.

I’m not an Apple fanboy – the only Apple device I currently own is a 4 year-old refurbished iPod Nano. I don’t carry an iPhone – I use a Samsung Ace Windows Mobile smartphone. I still like the device because it’s tiny and has great battery life for my trips. I was recently scolded for not using Keynote for my presentations. My main computer is a refurbished Dell XPS M1330 laptop which I’ve enjoyed over the past year although lately the fan has made so much noise that I can’t bring it to SXSW with me. I have been considering purchasing the new Asus ULvt30 laptop as it has a super battery and looks like it would meet my needs well.

So why do I want the Apple iPad? It’s been bashed from blog to blog and fanboys are torching their shrines to Steve Jobs. (side note, I wonder if the fanboys would have loved the device if Jobs gave one to everyone in the audience. You know, just like Google did with the Nexus One. Didn’t see much hate over that way, did ya?)

The Asus laptop weighs in at just under 4 pounds. It’s got great specs and will work perfectly for coding, working on my startup, and all the other heavy lifting that a computer is meant to handle. Everyday I am in NYC at an event, meeting an entrepreneur looking for advice or meeting with a customer of my startup. Many times it would be nice to have a device that I can whip out in a second and show off my startup, look at other startups, review a presentation, etc. Typically I use my mobile for checking my various email accounts and browsing the web using the Skyfire mobile browser. The iPad will be able to handle everything I’ve listed and more and I can travel around with a 1.5 pound machine. If I take the laptop with me, it’s lugging around a 3x heavier machine and then I also have to take a bigger (and heavier) laptop bag as well. The iPad will fit into my lightweight bag with no issues.

ReadWriteWeb had an interesting post about how the iPad will allow startups to create “instant demos”. I very much agree with this premise and could see startups purchasing one just for the demo ability.

I am also hoping that I can use the iPad as my new music playing device where I start a playlist, “hold” the device and stick it into my bag and the music keeps playing.

Based on what I have read, it does appear that I will have some gripes with the device. First, it has no camera – a camera would have been excellent for networking and I am guessing it will be on version 2 – isn’t that how Jobs creates his devices? Jobs says the battery will last 10 hours which probably means 3-4 in real life. I certainly hope the power cord is super light and easy to carry. The iPad also apparently can’t handle multi-tasking which seems stupid because many times you will want to browse the web and listen to a song in your iTunes collection. Apparently there is some issue where Flash doesn’t work on the iPad — not exactly sure how this will affect my Web usage but it is something to consider.

Update: The comments seem to indicate you can play a song in iTunes and work in the browser.

From what I can tell so far, the iPad might also improve my productivity while I am out and about because I can load up on apps that I can use to keep better track of everything going on in my life from scheduling to note taking to contact management.

It looks like there will be adapters that will connect into the iPad to allow for some external functions. I am hoping that a foldable keyboard is one of those options. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like you can carry a second battery. It would also be great if you can plug the iPad into a projector for large group demos and presentations.

I’m not sure whether I will purchase the model with the 3G. My Ace phone handles Bluetooth tethering very well so I could just use that when needed. I’m guessing you can’t add on the 3G later so my guess is that I will take the 3G version. I’m quite certain I will go for the least expensive version. The 3G service plans seem expensive to me – especially since if you only use it a drop, you still pay for the entire month. I am actually willing to bet that one of the sweet spots for the iPad will be for people who are happy with their cell phone but want a smarter device without buying an iPhone or Droid.

So to summarize why I want an iPad:

lightweight
ability to check and respond to emails and handle customer inquiries for my startup
web browser
productivity apps
meeting functionality (review presentations, review apps, discussions)
long battery life
new music player to replace my old Nano

I’d also like to note that I am sure there are other tablet machines on the market that are worth looking into. I have not started this research yet but plan to before looking at the iPad for purchase.

Had the device been available for purchase before SXSW, my bet is that you would see 1,000 or more of the devices in the convention center.

The iPad could also replace my wish of moving into a new mobile device this year. If I have an iPad that tethers to my phone and my phone to handle calls (which Sprint does perfectly), then I am all set.

Overall I think the iPad will be a huge winner for Apple. Ithink the price will drop a bit by mid-year which will get more mainstream users excited about the device. Now I need to work on getting more pageviews so I can pay for the new iPad device.

Jobs boasted, This is the worst thing the Internet Internet debut of the heat will cool down by iPad

According to sources, Apple iPad launch, online sales of the computer may be declining rapidly.

Apple iPad computer industry may have given access to the Internet this computer thermal cooling. Apple CEO Steve Jobs did not hide his contempt for this Dell Inspiron 9400 Battery on the Internet. January 27, he released iPad time in San Francisco said: “The Internet is the worst thing in this computer, which is the cheapest laptop.”

PC makers have begun to worry that consumers may recognize the views of Steve Jobs. According to market research firm IDC, online sales of the computers in the first quarter growth rate significantly decreased.

IDC expects the first quarter of the Internet with this computer shipped approximately 4.8 million units, up 33.6%. The first quarter of 2009, the Internet with this computer is 360 million units shipped, up 872 percent year on year growth. IDC analyst Richard Shim said: “Everybody wanted to access the computer as a different type or different types of products. In fact, consumers think they are nothing but another kind of computer.”

Price drop is not the Internet the only problem facing the computer. There are signs that demand for the Internet component of the computer started down. According to media reports, since reduced orders, access the computer LCD panel makers have cut production. HP, Dell and macros? Including a number of computer makers refused to give access to the Internet unsold inventory number of the computer is up.

The majority of Internet computers use Intel’s Atom chip. Susie Ramirez Intel spokesman declined to say whether computer makers to reduce the chip orders. She said: “The circumstances are changing every quarter, but in the end, we expect in the future the Internet will be sold tens of millions of units of the computer.”

Some computer makers have begun to open eyes, looking for a Dell Latitude D610 Battery under consumer concern. Sony’s senior vice president of information products, said Michael Abary: “The Internet is about to lose its freshness computer has. Everybody guess what, under a hot product, at least we have realized that Internet sales will not be in this high-speed computer growth. “

As the economic recession has reduced the budget of consumers, the Internet the computer to the advantage of low prices quickly occupied the market, sales exploding. But when people buy a home computer to the Internet after this, the fragile keyboard, not familiar with the operating system and application software support, no matching problem quickly exposed, many people feel very disappointed.

Internet sales of this computer does increase over last year. However, because consumers are reluctant to access the computer’s low price and give up the functions of conventional laptops, such as playing games and editing images functionality. And notebook computers become thinner and more compact too.

If the Internet is no longer the PC attractive to consumers, then the computer maker’s profit will be affected. According to computer makers, said sales last Christmas season, online sales of the computer all the computers in the proportion of total sales reached a record 26%.

In the past two years, the enterprise market doldrums, many retailers regard the focus on the consumer market. The largest U.S. consumer electronics retail chain Best Buy claims that computer to make Internet access portable computer products this Christmas season sales growth of more than 10%. Best Buy spokesman Justin Barber said before the earnings announcement, the company would not comment on first quarter sales.

IPad’s upcoming Internet market may be cooling the computer part. PriceGrabber.com comparison shopping site, according to the March 30 release of an online survey reported that about one-fifth of the computers and laptops online potential buyers are considering buying iPad, and does not intend to buy more traditional portable computer .

IPad can be used to send and receive e-mail, Internet, watching movies and reading books. But most of the Internet so the computer does not function.

Computer makers have begun to prepare for the counterattack iPad HP pavilion dv9000 Battery. Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Sony, Asus, Lenovo and Samsung Electronics have announced plans to launch Tablet PC products this year.

Hewlett-Packard Web site for its upcoming Tablet PC Slate’s publicity. PC Business Unit, HP chief technology officer Phil McKinney pointed out that HP’s products fully support the Internet, but can not support the Flash format iPad network pictures and video. HP spokesman Marlene Somsak added: “We will soon launch its own Tablet PC Slate, it does not like the iPad as self-centered.”

After a period of rapid growth, the golden age of the Internet the computer may have gone.

Over the next few months, such as Costanzo AT & T customers will bring big trouble. As millions of Apple iPhone mobile phone users consume a lot of Internet traffic, AT & T’s 3G network has suffered a lot of pressure, the user has been complaining about AT & T’s 3G network frequent dropped calls and slow speeds issues.

Some industry analysts believe, iPad will result in AT & T’s network problems from worsening. March 2 this year, held an investor conference in San Francisco, AT & T CEO Randall Stephenson @ (Randall Stephenson) said he expected the main iPad is a “use Wi-Fi equipment.” Some analysts believe that Stephenson’s remarks too early, AT & T will find iPad demand for its 3G network resources much more powerful than expected.

Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett @ (Craig Moffett), said, iPad “take up a lot of bandwidth needs,” and this is likely to be very disappointed users. Moffett said, iPad big screen movie viewing program can support a variety of needs such as bandwidth-intensive applications, which means that 3G version of iPhone iPad will consume the equivalent of twice the network resources. He said: “It seems AT & T that, in most cases iPad users to use Wi-Fi Internet connection. That’s a slightly far-fetched, after all, no one is a used product.”

Key factors: iPad sales and use of

Independent wireless industry analyst Shiqie Tan @ Sharma (Chetan Sharma) argued that support 3G function iPad network traffic consumed the equivalent of two-thirds of iPhone traffic. According to Piper Jaffray analyst Chris @ Larson (Chris Larsen) expected this year to support 3G features iPad sales will reach 2.7 million. According to this forecast the iPad network resources occupied by the equivalent of 1.7 million iPhone handsets. Larson said that considering the iPad outstanding sales performance this year, and users connect to the Internet’s  use of 3G, iPad sure AT & T’s network will create a lot of pressure. He said: “If AT & T’s network once again be blamed, then the AT & T’s reputation will be seriously jeopardized.”

Of course, iPad also may not give AT & T’s network has brought enormous pressure, after all, is not yet know the iPad can achieve this year, analysts expect sales of between two million to six million do not know whether the user will make extensive use iPad streaming video services to take up a lot of network resources. Perhaps there will be many users choose lower-priced Wi-Fi version iPad, in airports and coffee shops with Wi-Fi hot spots such as the regional Internet access.

Ipad Protection Is A Necessity

April 27, 2010 by Jim Pad

The iPad has been released and consumers are excited to get their hands on this new device. The iPad is a device between a cell phone and a laptop and is said to be revolutionary. Consumers reviewing this device are looking forward to replacing textbooks, newspapers, paper books, and other non digital media that they can now carry around with them on s small, convenient reading digital pad. The issue is that the iPad will be traveling with people everywhere and will be susceptible to everyday wear and tear. The key to keeping the ipad protected and looking sleek with it’s beautiful appearance is covering it with good quality screen protectors and cases.

Cases are of the utmost importance for the new iPad. Consumers are looking for sleek cases to keep the device slim and beautiful looking. Many companies are offering cases that look like laptop cases and have a bulky appearance. This contradicts the whole idea of owning an iPad vs. a Laptop. Slim is better. New Silicone (rubber) cases are being made to provide optimal protection against every day use. Why even buy an iPad if you still need to carry a large bulky case. Consumers want to be able to slide it in and out their purses, bags, or pre-existing carrying cases. Good quality silicone cases seem to be the top choices for the iPad.

There is a company called Accessory Geeks that specialize in affordable silicone cases.
The silicone iPad case will protect the body, but it has also been recommended to purchase some sort of invisible screen protector. Do not buy a cheap screen protector. These screen protectors will do nothing for the consumer except make the screen look worse. I have purchased cheap screen protectors and I could not even get them on my iPods. I went to a local Best Buy and bought a good screen protector for my iPod Touch and it was easy to adhere and looks beautiful. I spent quiite a bit more on the better quality protector but it was worth it.

There are many companies offering screen protectors for the iPad but only a few companies that have good quality products with decent prices. One in particular is a company called ZAGG. They have a screen protector called the Invisible Shield and there are many tests showing the effectiveness of the high quality of their product. One of the product demonstrations shows an electric sander sanding the shield resulting in no scratches. Another demonstration showed an iPod (with the Invisible Shield) in a jar full of screws, nails, and bolts being shaken to high heaven. The iPod was taken out with no scratches (of course the iPod as also protected with a silicone casing).

One final demo was a person taking a key a trying to scratch the Invisible Shield of the iPod. Of course, scratches. These demo’s were very convincing and the customer reviews also reinforce that the Zagg makes a good product and is highly recommended for your new iPad.
