Android ipad army starts to form – as Big Rival to Apple iPad

July 31, 2010 by Jim Pad

2000000! This is the iPad listed in the April 3 after a period of less than 60 days of sales. Apple announced through the official channels of sales of this proud achievement.Faced with such strong market demand, the major manufacturers have announced the launch of their Tablet PC

Dell’s Streak (top right), a 5-inch tablet powered by Android, launched Tuesday in the U.K. and the device will come to the U.S. later in the summer. Samsung announces Galaxy S Android ipad……
In the high-stakes race to catch Apple Inc.’s hit iPad, the Android operating system that Google Inc. popularized in tablet pc is emerging as an early front-runner. The Android tablets are coming and this time Apple won’t have a big head start.

The big difference with the Android ipad army is that the Apple iPad doesn’t have much of a head start. Apple’s iPhone had a few years on the first Android device. Google’s Android platform is growing quickly, but isn’t likely to catch the iPhone in terms of smartphone market share any time soon. Google’s Android will be a solid No. 3 in smartphones.

However, tablets are a different story. Apple’s iPad isn’t as expensive as originally thought, but it’s not going to be $199 any time soon. Android ipad will hit that price point. Just to reiterate: None of these Android devices are going to matter to Apple, which doesn’t sweat market share standings.

The big question is how long it takes an Android ipad equivalent to the HTC Droid Incredible to form. The Incredible is a solid iPhone rival, but Apple had a few years to establish the its smartphone before real rivals surfaced. The iPad is a big success, but will only have a head start of a quarter or two before Android tablets appear everywhere.

Can Android ipad reach feature parity on the iPad while squeezing Apple on price?

But when it comes to tablets, operating systems and applications may become even more important differentiators—just as software became a huge advantage for Apple with the iPhone.

“Without applications, the device itself means nothing,”said Barry Lam, chairman of the contract laptop manufacturer Quanta Computer Inc., during a recent investor conference.

Google’s Android operating system, as it did in smartphones, is emerging as the most potent alternative to Apple’s technology. “The tablet trend is clearly going toward Android,”said Jack Kang, director of technical marketing for Marvell Technology Group Ltd.

Android offers several attractions. Most of the 50,000 apps that have been written for cellphones that use the operating system should run in some fashion on Android-based tablets. Android also allows most programs to work even if manufacturers change the underlying chip architecture. And Google doesn’t charge companies for using it.

If anyone’s coming back from China, I hope they’re bringing back an Android iPad, as reported on Japanese TV news. This looks like the first iPadalike to go on sale, and a large part of its appeal is the low price ($158). However, I expect some rather more expensive devices will be shown at this week’s Computex trade show in Taiwan, starting with MSI’s Wind Pad 110, which has an ARM processor running Google’s Android mobile phone operating system. Acer, Dell and Lenovo are also tipped to enter the market at some point.

moonse e7001 is the most Popular tablet pc to run the Android

July 30, 2010 by Jim Pad

What is the best tablet to run the Android OS on? It seems that Apple may have been the first in the market, introducing the iPad. However, it looks like the real competition is just around the corner as every major mobile and computer manufacturer is talking about their own version of the tablet. Acer, Dell,HP,HTC and Lenovo are going to Release their Tablet with Android. The Android OS is the most exciting development in open operating systems for mobile devices. It is a great software environment, and deserves the very best hardware to run on. Which of these Android-capable tablets is the best for running the OS?

The results are (578 votes):

12% voted for Notion Ink Adam
31% voted for MoonSE E7001
16% voted for Smart Devices SmartQ-V7
20% voted for Hardkernel ODROID-T
21% voted for Mastone Lifepad 3G I850

yes,moonse e7001 won.

Moonse E7001 has a 7-inch touch screen, with the support of 600 MHz processor and Rockchip RK2808 Android operating system 1.5. Going forward, the ‘brains’ who invested in these tablets can also be upgraded, use the Cortex-A8 processor. Ie the screen resolution of 800×480 pixels.

Other facilities offered by Moonse E7001 are 3G network, SD card slot (up to 32GB), Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and powerful battery for up to 5 hours (3000 mAh). It’s from the side of the tablet dimensions are slightly thicker than the iPad. Weighs approximately 0.7 pons, nearly half the weight of iPad. The more interesting part is that this tablet has been pinned with 1.3 MP front camera and the USB port. Based on the information, Moonse E7001 tablets will be released with relatively very cheap, which is about 158 U.S. dollars.

I like to use its ebook function(alot better than reading in my HTC), skype, msn, webmail, youtube and some little games, also i like the Antroid Market software that could download freeware onine and install easily. what I do like about it are several things: Light and portable; I can use as an Internet interface when out and about the house/yard; I can check my GMail without making a mad dash for my netbook or desktop; and finally, I think I can save “at least” $100 on an ebook reader of similar calibre AND have colour screen, and not that “e-paper” crud.
I will admit, though, that I am curious as to the “fit and finish” of the product. We’ll see, eh?
Somebody call it the Killer of  iPad from China, but some said that its only a fake IPad, Is it right to call it a fake ipad? Does not an open architecture and the possibility of standard USB / 3G slots make this something (potentially) better than an ipad?

It seems that Apple may have been the first in the market, introducing the iPad. However, it looks like the real competition is just around the corner as every major mobile and computer manufacturer is talking about their own version of the tablet. There are rumors about Google’s attempt to enter the tablet market with a device that it’s developing with major hardware manufacturers. Google has nothing to prove in the OS aspect of the tablet, as we have already witnessed Android capabilities on the Notion Ink Adam and on Nvidia’s Tegra tablet. Microsoft joined forces with HP in an attempt to dominate the tablet market, which ended up as a huge disappointment, as the $500 tablet is nothing more than a Windows 7 touchscreen PC. Nvidia recently introduced its new tablet that has 1 GB of RAM, 2 USB ports and a frontal camera (three things that the iPad does not have). Lets hope that Google will meet our expectations.

iPhone iOS 4 Complaints Could Be Apples Vistagate (NewsFactor)

July 30, 2010 by Jim Pad

Just when you thought it was safe to turn on your iPhone … Antennagate may be over, but complaints are now rolling in from iPhone 3G users who downloaded the latest Apple mobile operating system.

There are reports that upgrading the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS to iOS 4 causes the phone to drag and the battery to run out more quickly. Apple has said it is investigating the issue, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

“My I-phone 3G was running perfectly fine, till I updated to OS 4, it’s been slower than the slowest, and even turns itself off at anytime, during browsing and even during calls. I updated to 4.0.1 only to improve things a little bit. Still the problems persist,” wrote a user from India who calls himself I-Phone 4.0.1 bugs. “Am cursing myself why I updated it.”

Worldwide Complaints

The problem isn’t confined to Asia. Users in the United States are reporting the same issues. Some say the iPhone 3GS now “stutters.” Others say the iPod capabilities on the phone are “completely busted.” Still others report the updated iPhones won’t go to the home screen and take 30 seconds to respond to various commands.

One forum complainer named “Savvytraveller” said his apps are crashing or just freezing after the upgrade to iOS 4.0.1. This same users reports the handset is getting hot. The complaints go on and on, giving Apple another headache after the iPhone 4 case giveaway just eased the last one.

Indeed, this isn’t what Apple expected when it touted iOS 4, the newest version of the iPhone mobile operating system with the much-anticipated multitasking. Many iPhone 3GS users upgraded to tap into the multitasking capabilities, which promise to let users switch between apps while preserving battery life.

iOS 4 also offers a new Folders capability that lets users organize apps into collections by dragging and dropping. On Apple’s web site, the company promises, “The iOS 4.0.1 Software Update improves the formula to determine how many bars of signal strength to display on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G. The real signal strength remains the same, but the bars on iPhone will indicate it more precisely.”

Apple’s Vista?

But iOS 4.0.1 doesn’t seem to be perfectly compatible with the 3G model. Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, said the new OS is really starting to become Apple’s version of Microsoft Windows Vista, a platform that plagued the software giant for months and will go down in history as a faux pas.

“Apple may have become too comfortable in its leadership, and now we are getting complaints ranging from iTunes being out of date to these new software-hardware problems with the 3G,” Enderle said. “What we may be seeing is that Apple was too dominant for too long, and like Microsoft when they hit Windows Vista, didn’t realize that they weren’t invulnerable. The end result has been a problematic platform.”

What can Apple do to emerge from the negative tide it finds itself in? As Enderle sees it, Apple needs to admit it made a mistake, stop making mistakes, and, “like Microsoft eventually did with Vista, fix it.”

Mobile Apps Leak Personal Info on Android, Apple Phones (NewsFactor)

July 30, 2010 by Jim Pad

Mobile apps on Android-powered smartphones and Apple’s iPhone can disclose more personal data than most users realize, security vendor Lookout revealed Wednesday at the Black Hat USA 2010 conference in Las Vegas. Rather than being malicious, users often give the apps permission to access data when they are installed.

Lookout CEO John Hering and CTO Kevin Mahaffey told a session titled App Attack: Surviving the Mobile Application Explosion that a popular Android wallpaper app from Jackeey Wallpaper sent users’ data, including phone numbers and SIM card numbers, to a server in Shenzhen, China. The wallpapers included My Little Pony and Star Wars.

Free apps can be risky, they said, with about 29 percent of free Android apps and 33 percent of those for the iPhone able to determine a user’s location. Apple’s iOS does, however, require apps to alert users when location information is accessed. iPhone users can also use the settings to block apps from accessing personal data.

In addition, Hering and Mahaffey said, about eight percent of Android apps and 14 percent of iPhone apps can access user contacts. And 47 percent of Android apps and 23 percent of iPhone apps have third-party code, usually for mobile ads and analytics, but sometimes for other purposes.

They urged app developers to be aware of security practices, especially when third-party code is added. Mahaffey noted, “The lesson today is that developers don’t always know what’s inside their apps.”

Hering added, “Standardized APIs are making it easier and easier to actually create practical attacks. Instead of having to do something complex in a desktop-like environment, I know I can just call the contact API, for example, and have a very simple programmatic way to grab that information.”
