Playing popular strategy game Starcraft 2 using an iPhone or even an iPad sounds like a usability nightmare, but developer Daniel Hellerman is planning to make it happen regardless of the potential issues.
Hellerman is working on an iOS application called the Starcraft 2 Gameboard that will let you fully control Starcraft 2 from your iPhone or iPad, complete with “mini-map control, detailed unit statistics, and easy touch access to the game’s most important hotkeys and macros,” he claims.
Blizzard, the company that develops the popular Starcraft game franchise, is known for promptly shutting down third-party projects related to its games that don’t follow its terms of service to the letter. The future of the Starcraft 2 Gameboard therefore seems uncertain.
However, the FAQ section of the application’s website claims that the system “does not modify essential Starcraft 2 functions” and that the device works “almost as another keyboard, therefore it is completely compatible with Starcraft 2.” Furthermore, the site claims the application is “not a hack” and “does not modify any game files whatsoever.”

Online iPad shoppers used to be forced to wait up to a week for their tablet orders to ship. But now orders ship within 24 hours as Apple has apparently solved a nagging iPad supply problem. According to Apple’s online store all six versions of Apple’s iPad ship in just 24 hours from the time of purchase — down from up to seven days in recent weeks.
Since it first launched the iPad in April, Apple managed to sell more than 3.27 million tablets, according to figures from late July. Now, after months of delays and estimated delivery times as much as three weeks at peak times, Apple’s official online store displays a delivery schedule of just 24 hours.
Apple basically ran out of iPads the week it launched the tablet in the U.S.. The company said it has sold 500,000 units during launch week, and had more than 200,000 pre-orders for the WiFi-only iPad before the tablet even went on sale.
With such high demand for its iPad, Apple had to immediately delay the international launch of the tablet until the end of May, while the company prepared to introduce the WiFi+3G iPad by the end of April in the U.S. New pre-orders for the 3G iPad also had to be delayed by a week.
Throughout the summer, the estimated shipping time for the iPad from Apple’s official online store stayed at seven to ten days for delivery, according to a chart compiled by CNN Fortune. In August, this went down to five to seven days, then to one to three days last week, and now to 24 hours.
estimates from iSuppli say that Apple will sell almost 13 million iPads by the end of this year, up from a previous forecast of just over seven million. A new iPad is expected to arrive in April 2011, according to the same company.

Samsung sold more than one million Galaxy S Android smartphones in the U.S., the company announced. In a month and a half, the combined sales of T-Mobile Vibrant and AT&T Captivate topped one million, in a boon for Google Android’s fight for supremacy against Apple’s iPhone.
AT&T released the phone on August 15, while T-Mobile, the smallest of the major wireless carriers in the U.S., introduced its version of the Galaxy S on July 21. For comparison, the iPhone 4 sold 1.7 million devices in the first weekend of availability.
Samsung employed a multicarrier strategy with the Galaxy S platform. The phone comes in four different flavors for the four U.S. carriers, with slight differences in appearance and functionality. It’s called the Vibrant on T-Mobile, Captivate on AT&T, Fascinate on Verizon, and Epic 4G on Sprint.
The four phones have the same main characteristics: a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, a 1GHz processor, 5-megapixel camera, and WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth. A notable difference is with the Sprint Epic 4G, which also has a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and a front-facing camera. See all the differences between the four versions of the Galaxy S here.
The Samsung Galaxy S phones are shipping with Android 2.1, which is not the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system. Android 2.2, dubbed Froyo, brings full Adobe Flash support, mobile hotspot capabilities, and speed improvements, among many other features. Samsung did not give a specific date for the Froyo update for the Galaxy S phones, saying only that support is coming later this year.
The Samsung Galaxy S range phones also received positive reviews. PCWorld’s Ginny Mies gave both the Vibrant and the Captivate 4.5 stars, with extra marks for the crisp display and multimedia features. T-Mobile and AT&T sell the Vibrant and Captivate for $199 with a two-year contract, but you can get the Captivate for free with a plan from Amazon, and the Vibrant for $50.
As the Galaxy S ships on more carriers in the coming weeks, expect more good news from Samsung. Sprint’s version of the Samsung Galaxy S, the Epic 4G, will be available from August 31, while the Verizon version, the Fascinate, is expected to arrive later this fall (rumored date is September 9).
